We have noticed that there are a lot of rubbish in our community and people don't know how to reduce, reuse and recycle. We have decided to make a plan to tell people the correct way to treat their rubbish.

Answer
Person
Is there more litter in parks than anywhere else?
Yes, because more people go there and it is a public place.
Yes, public places are shared by everyone, so nobody really looks after it because people think it is not their responsibility.
Jessica
How can we reduce litter in our community?
By increasing the amount of rubbish bins and putting up posters.
  • Reduce and reuse as much as you can before you recycle.
  • Use returnable, reusable or refillable drink containers or bring your own cup.
  • Use a litter bag in your vehicle.
  • Always put your trash in a proper container. If one is not available, hold on to your garbage until you find one.
  • Put your garbage out for collection as close to pickup time as possible and secure items in your recycling boxes.
  • Support community cleanups, recycling programs, legislation and other efforts to reduce litter.
  • Get the support of your neighbourhood. Successful litter control must be a continuous, ongoing effort, which involves the entire community - from youth to seniors, business, community groups and the media. Organize a committee to develop a plan of action.
  • Set a good example. Don't litter and begin to take pride in keeping your community clean while informing others about the detriments of littering.
Carol

Around about a thousand
Alexandria
Are local schools a big contribution to the litter in the community?
Yes, because there are a lot of people in schools some of irresponsible.
Yes, because most kids are too lazy to walk over to the bin and so they throw the rubbish wherever they like
Venus
Is there always a large amount of litter in our community?
Yes, some people can't be bothered throwing their rubbish in bins.
Most people think that it is not their responsibility to look after their community and don't care for it like they are supposed to. They are also too lazy to throw it away.
Carol
What is the ratio of littering people in our community?
I think 5 out of 8 people litter.
Between 3 and 5 out of 9
Alexandria

Death and sickness.
Some animals have become endangered and have died

Group diary:
For these 3-4 days we have been making posters and doing some research. We have also email the Manukau council and they have replied by saying that we need to email someone else before we can start our trip, even though they are happy to offer support. On day 3 we have emailed everyone but we have to wait for them to reply. For the posters that we are making we are planning to photo copy 15-20 and 300-400 A5 sized flyers.
The council has returned a e-mail saying that we are not allowed to put up posters so we are forced to change our plan.

Evaluation:
We think that the effect of our inquiry on the community would be that people would be more concerned and alert about the environment and try to reduce the rubbish that they are throwing away.

Individual reflection:
Aili:
Alexandria: I think The Council should have contacted us back earlier because they said they would get back to us and we waited forever and then they said no for us putting up posters so we are just putting flyers in mailboxes.
Carol: We had a lot of trouble trying to contact the council and printing our flyers out. But luckily it all worked out
Jessica:
Venus: I think that our group did quite good because we manage to give out all the flyers. We had some difficulties at the beginning because we couldn't contact the councils and it took them a long time to reply back and we didn't know where to photo copy the flyers needed.

Group reflection: We think we have made a difference in our community by telling people to recycle. We have had some difficulties along the way with the printing and were behind but we managed to do it anyway.
